Smile Amon Amarth, The Black Dahlia Murder and Evocation - Amsterdam, Melkweg - May 20 2011

After listening to the new Amon Amarth album, Surtur Rising, my liking to this band returned. Their previous album was not much to my liking so I hadn't seen these guys perform in ages.

Because I really like the new album I decided to go to their show in Amsterdam, but it turned out I had to go alone because some people had to perform themselves and the others went to see them play.

No biggy, I can have fun on my own, I often run into acquaintances at the Melkweg anyway! Today I ran into Infidel Ed, Gijs, two guys whose names I keep forgetting and Gibby!

The day starts off with classes, after that I rush back home for a shower and for some clean clothes. Had a quick bite to eat and went to the Melkweg. Five hours of travel by train/subway/tram on one day is exhausting! Especially when you forget your MP3 player...
Anyway, I arrive at the venue and Evocation was already playing, this band is not that interesting, I watched about 15 minutes of their set and decided to go out for a smoke.
Outside I meet Gijs and the two guys whose names I keep forgetting and Ed Infidel and his girlfriend, had a chat with all of them and went back inside to look at the merchandise. They brought very cool things, got myself a t-shirt and a flag!

When I go back into the hall The Black Dahlia Murder is playing and like I expected, I did NOT like this at all. I have tried listening to this band many times on youtube and the same thought keeps popping up in my head: Abusing your double bass is not the way to make music! All you hear is constant bass drums and some idiotic screamo/deathcore guitar/bass work. Definitely a No-Go band if you ask me.
So I went back outside for a smoke. I got thirsty and went to the Albert Heijn (grocery store) for some monster energy!

When I got back TBDM was still playing... I got bored and for about 15 minutes I sat down outside. After a while a lot of people came outside so I figured TBDM was done and I went searching for a good spot to watch the Amon Amarth show because the hall was now half empty (or half full xD) =)

Sound check was taking forever as usual. But when they finally started playing the crowd exploded like it was a ticking time bomb! A huge moshpit erupted as soon as the intro started! Oh did I say it was sold out already? Anyone who has been to a sold out Melkweg show knows how crowded it gets and the entire front area was one huge moshpit! Very cool to see!

These are the songs they played:

    War of the Gods
    With Oden On Our Side
    Destroyer of the Universe
    Masters of War
    Live for the Kill
    Guardians of Asgaard
    Doom Over Dead Man
    Slaves of Fear
God, His Son and Holy Whore
    Varyags of Miklagaard
    For Victory or Death
Victorious March / Gods of War Arise / Death in Fire (some sort of medley)
    Encore:
    Twilight of the Thunder God
    Runes to My Memory
    The Pursuit of Vikings

I must say that even the songs from Twilight of the Thunder God came out really well in a live setting. The sound was great too!

In conclusion I can say that my liking to Amon Amarth has definitely returned to its former glory.

How was the crowd reaction to Black Diarrhea Murder? I wish that band would just go away.

Yeah I saw this show when they played Tyrol in Stockholm and I agree with everything you say. I missed evocation, Black Dahlia where boring as balls and Amon Amarth kicked ass. The encores were really good yeah. I ended up buying an Amon Amarth shirt that I'm wearing right now as well. The yellow and black one with sort of undead vikings and with the text "They march in full battle dress with faces grim and pale, Tattered banners and bloody flags, rusty spears and blades" on the back. Really good looking shirt.

@Anjzilla: Yeah I know, I blame it on the busy day xD

@Amok: It was one of those days where the ninja kids got totally obliterated in the moshpit by real metalheads who just wanted to annoy them. But most AA fans were outside when TBDM was playing and when AA was playing they pretty much all left =P And since I only watched 2 songs I can't really say much about the crowd, but it was definetely more crowded when AA played!

@enraged: I was actually in doubt between that shirt, the red one and the blue one xD I ended up buying that flag which has the same print as the red shirt and I bought the blue shirt because I want tour dates on the shirt, also that yellowish one we can buy for 10 euro (instead of 20) at a merchandising website (called large.nl)^^ I might buy one later.

The audio quality is OK but the video quality it not that good, nevertheless it still gives an indication of what the concert was like:

I'm happy to hear your liking of them came back!

I'm glad the UK tour had a better lineup, I hate TBDM.

Yeah, I know, Amon Amarth would have been great, but I always stick to my first appointment, in this case Puur Obscuur. And doubt is not good when a band can sell out a venue like this. I might have been too late for a ticket after all. See my review soon

You had fun! Good to read! Excellent set list.

@herrieman: It sold out on the last 1-2 days before the concert.
