Forever Young Festival, May 21st, Grootebroek
This is surely a fine festival. Small, cozy, not too expensive, close to Westwoud, usually good bands (not like Dijkpop, that totally abandoned rock and metal…) and it’s been around since 1987, if I’m correct. At least, my first visit to Forever Young was in 1989, with The Gathering headlining. Wow. Now it’s 2011 and Forever Young is still there! The festival hasn’t really changed much over the years. OK, nowadays there’s a tent, nowadays it’s two days, but it’s still pretty regional. I have not been to the regional first night in years and this year I had a reason: see Salt Chain 6 review.
I had enough to do this Saturday, as long as I would be present at 5 PM: Heideroosjes were about to bash Grootebroek hard. I don’t know if they had another show planned today, they can easily make such a festival become instantly crowded, but it was pretty early to begin. Heideroosjes is a well oiled punkrock machine, with loads of hilarious comments between songs, great lyrics (in Dutch and English) and an excellent sound. They even did a theater tour, but I am no fan of stand up comedy and certainly not fan of Hans Teeuwen, as their theater show was greatly influenced by Holland’s best known stand up comedian (he even went abroad with his show). All and all, with a sabbatical year included, I think I haven’t seen Heideroosjes in quite some time. 2009 or something. This is the set list:
- Scapegoat Revolution
- Fistful of Ideals
- We’re All Fucked Up (killer! But the pit was so violent I stepped down a bit)
- Ik Wil Niks (rage!!!)
- Break The Public Peace
- Turn Around (too poppy for my ears)
- Time is Ticking Away (referring to the end of the worldyesterday)
- Lekker Belangrijk
- Ik Zie Je Later (quite emotional)
- Iedereen is Gek Behalve Jij (great lyrics)
- Nothing’s Wrong (wall of death)
- Damclub Hooligan (one of their great singalongs)
- Sjonnie & Anita (should we just call this their biggest hit?)
- I’m Not Deaf, I’m Just Ignoring You (referring to the first time they played Forever Young, 12 years ago)
- 2 new songs
I thought I would like to buy a shirt or maybe their latest album, but as I ran into my former neighbor and I turned around, they were already gone. Time for some food then. With Kees and Siemen I thought I would go to the Chinese restaurant in town, but the snack stand has improved a lot over the years so I got showarma and the tiniest ‘health’burger ever. The next band was already on stage, but I don’t think this will fit on MRUforums.com. These oafs calling themselves The Hot Stewards played nothing but the wrongest of wrong 70-ies and 80-ies ‘hits’ (Anjzilla might have liked it) like Rick Astley, Weather Girls and Wham! Squeaky, out of tune and all. I felt my health burger spin in my guts. Nearly came up again, but I could stop the reverse peristalsis just in time for another beer. But my health burger stayed down and speaking to Hester again I calmed down. Only to be getting enthusiast again, as stoner / 70-ies rock band Shaking Godspeed entered the stage! This was amazing! Music in purest form (bass, drums, guitar, vocals, small organ; three man band), heavy, loud, intense, well played, sounding great. I felt like I was on Roadburn festival again! Very good!! Check out SHAKING GODSPEED | Free Music, Tour Dates, Photos, Videos and be thrilled, expect something between The Byrds, The Animals, Pentagram and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion! As the band were ready the singer ran to the merch stand and I followed. I wanted a shirt, but the singer Wout Kemkens was so disappointed he could not sell me an XL shirt, he offered a CD or a LP to cope with the loss. What loss? I took the LP and asked: ‘How much longer will you guys be here?’ Answer:”About 20 minutes, maybe half an hour, why?” I said I would bring the LP to my sister in town, and if they’re still around when I came back I also would buy the CD, as I still play more CDs than vinyl (that’s never been different) so I came back and had my pen at the ready, the entire band signed and personified the album. Woot! See you next time, boys, as I have seen you’re invited to the final goodbye show of The Shavers (guitarist Cock de Jong is terminally ill, May 29th, if Cock can still stand up right, he’ll die on stage…) Or else… somewhere… out there…
Feuerengel would be the last interesting part of this year’s Forever Young festival, as it had been twice before. After the last performing band there’s always a bunch of DJs doing non-interesting stuff, I think I only once stayed until the very end of the festival. This year I would not make it until the last notes of Feuerengel, as my brother Alex convinced me to go fishing on the North Sea at dawn.. I figured I’d need about half an hour to cycle home (I wasn’t that drunk) so I could probably see Feuerengel for about an hour AND have something like sleep AND fish. But to be honest, talking to my first girlfriend ever, some other friends, I actually did not even see the band nor the show. I’m fine with that, I still have heard about half the songs they played:
- Rammlied
- Links 2,3,4
- B*********
- Sonne
- Moskau
- Mein Teil
Hmmm, I thought I had written more… but I said goodbye to my company and got on my bike. Without BBerry this time, but the streets were a lot quieter than yesterday and the road wasn’t that long either. Quickly brushing teeth, a splash of water and off to bed. Five o’clock Alex called me, I was just seconds awake, but fishing wasn’t such a great idea. I saw the float move from left to right and from right to left, my head pounding. I excused myself and fell asleep in the car. Alex awoke me grumpy, had caught nothing, now he had to put all rods in the car himself, he was getting hungry, I was too much party animal, but we moved on. All Macca’s and BKs were closed… Alex dropped me off at home, no longer grumpy, but even hungrier… See ya next year, Forever Young, Simone (my first gf, we only meet on FY, but every year), Dirk, Dirk, Shaking Godspeed, Feuerengel and so on.
