Aaltjesrock, October 28, Underground, Lelystad
With a terrible hangover and a borrowed car I got to Zaandam to get my ride to Lelystad. Jo said she needed to see Sabina Classen again and her pal Juan played his first gig with his new band. Dennis couldn’t come, NINI THE KISS had a bad case of influenza, so he stayed home to support her. We came to Lelystad, had a bite (good steak) and got into the venue called Underground. We had to wait so long everybody was wet and drousy. Dark Reign, Juan’s band was to play first. They combined nu stuff, Iron Maiden-riffing and brutal death. Juan has a voice that varies from pitchy screaming to ultra low grunting. Pity they only had 25 minutes… No bad way to start the festival, I long to hear any demo stuff. Next up was Plusminus, starting with Rock’n’Roll Damnation and I freaked out!! This was cool, this sort of farmyard attitude with pumping rock’n’roll (AC/DC was played three times, along with a Thin Lizzy song and Accept’s Burning). Very short, but it put a huge smile on my face. Third band today was Next Waste Dimension, these guys combine gabber samples with blunt death metal. Odd, but musically OK. Their music was a cross between Textures and God Dethroned, but after 30 to 35 minutes it all seemed to sound alike. Their last song was a Prodigy cover (No Good) and that was fun. Maybe this is a new genre, gabberdeath or something??
We teamed up with Juan and his wife and they wanted to eat, knowing Asrai was next. I like goth bands like Nightwish, Epica and After Forever a lot, but this was a showoff. Out of tune drumming, bad mix and a horrible singer. Bad cross between Type O Negative and The Cure. Good we missed most of the set. Geert also wanted to meet Sabina Classen, who walked through the audience as usual, we made photo’s with Juan and Sabina. Geert’s mini-interview with Sabina will be posted on YouTube, I guess. Next band today was The Lucifer Principle, with a fierce setting, lots of fire, an enthusiastic front man, a real contrabass and a roaring crowd it was a lot of fun. First pit of the day, lots of headbangers. One of the songs sounded exactly like Kataklysm’s “Manipulator of Souls” with different lyrics, but that’s not bad music to be played, right? I wanted to buy both CDemo’s, but I got two copies of the “Burn!” demo instead. I gave the second copy to Dennis because he missed this band. He already played it and liked it. I will get the other one, don’t care how.
The sixth band today was Gelderland’s pride Heidevolk, but it seemed a bit nationalistic to me. A seven-head band, including two singers and a violin. All songs sung by two singers, both singing the same lines, this bored me after two songs. Dressed in sheepskins, and other thirteenth century clothes, lyrics in Dutch about beer and Gelderland, I did not know whether I was so happy with these guys. They sounded like a bad cross between Skyclad and Finntroll, but I hated this polkastuff (strange, Finntroll is one of my fav bands, and I’ve seen Skyclad four times and loved it). Most of the crowd disagreed with me, but that’s their problem. Next band was Holy Moses. They played songs from most of their albums and their brutal thrash was greeted cheerfully by those who had not left after these Heidesuckers. A fine pit followed, the crowd was singing loudly and banged their necks and fists off. Cool. After a big hour the band took off for a while and was shouted back on stage again to play the last two songs. Of course we were invited on stage, and Juan managed to sing with Sabina. Great! I bought a Gelderland beer, a TLP-shirt and a Holy Moses picture disc, hand numbered (number 323 of 666). A little after midnight we got back to the car, called Dennis everything was OK and left. We had fun.
After a huge hangover headbanging is good for me, I found out. We got back to Zaandam, and discussed the day with Dennis. Like said before I handed him the TLP-demo, had one final drink and went to bed. Sunday I was invited to watch Jo’s new band practice. I liked the thrashy beginnings of new songs and the guys are pretty cool too. I did not hear a band name or what so ever, but I definitely going to check them again!
