I know its been a while, but but better late than never

This was my first real metal show and the second concert I've been to (the first was for A7X and a few other bands) and damn was it amazing! I honestly don't expect any other band to put on quite as good a show. I got there at about 6:30, an hour and a half before it started. In hindsight this was probably much earlier than necessary, but with next to no concert experience I wasn't sure. I parked at the mall across from the venue as they were charging ridiculous amounts for parking. After waiting for a half hour or so in line I finally got inside (just before it started raining too) and the inside of the stadium (which is normally the Florida Panthers Stadium) looked great. It is certainly one of the nicer hockey stadiums I've been to and I've seen a fair number.

After a quick restroom trip and noting where the entrance to the floor was I looked around for the stand selling shirts. A whole long table was set up, but the line was massive. Worried I might not get a good spot I decided to wait till after it ended to pick one up and headed down to the floor. I then proceeded to wait another hour or so...with the floor still relatively empty. And the shirts were sold out by the time I got to the stand afterwards. -_-

Once it hit about 8:30 (a half hour after they were supposed to start), some guy I didn't recognize came out and messed with a computer on a table. The lights went off and we (the audience) all got very excited...only to have our enthusiasm rewarded with a half hour of this guy playing mixes and samples of various rammstein songs. I later found out he was a member of combichrist. Some of the crowd (myself included) somewhat enjoyed the mixes, but it wasn't long before we started chanting "rammstein" trying to get this guy off the stage and them out!

At just a little after 9 he finally stopped and a few seconds later the bridge that many of us noticed up on the ceiling started to lower itself, connecting the stage with a mini stage at the center of the floor. One of the members, carrying a tourch, marched from (I believe, but I couldn't see them well) where the hockey players normally enter the rink. They marched one by one up the mini stage to the main stage, with Till following last and the touch barer lightning two big bowl shaped things (not sure what their called) on either side of the stage with a very epic looking stage set-up and awesome atmospheric music in the background.

Now the set list:
"Sonne"
"Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen"
"Keine Lust"
"Sehnsucht"
"Asche zu Asche"
"Feuer Frei!"
"Mutter"
"Mein Teil"
"Du Riechst So Gut"
"Links 2-3-4"
"Du Hast"
"Haifisch"

-Encore-

"Bück Dich"
"Mann Gegen Mann"
"Ohne Dich"

-Encore-

"Mein Herz Brennt"
"Amerika"
"Ich Will"
"Engel"
"Pussy"

The two encores had a very sort gap in between to the point where it felt more like a continuation than a second encore. At the end we were still calling them back, but with crew cleaning up the stage it was clear they wouldn't be coming back out. Unlike the other bands I saw the last time I was at a concert, Till only spoke twice (a fact he even joked about at the end), once and the end of the main show and again when they were actually done. For the opening they dressed in clothing similar to that in the video for Sonne and even had black makeup smeared all over them like dirt.

A major part of what makes this band so awesome live is all the crazy shit they do on stage. I'll highlight a few of my favorite parts: For Mein Teil Till came out in a butcher outfit pushing a pot and wielding a knife with a mic on one end. He pulled off the lid and out popped the keyboardist. At one point Till got a flamethrower and shot it at the bottom of the pot, lighting up all around the bottom of it with the keyboardist STILL INSIDE! For one of the earlier songs there was a circular chandelier looking thing that came down and showered so many sparks around him that you couldn't even see him and he kept singing the whole time! To me this was the most impressive thing they did as I have no idea how they pull that off without burning the shit out of him (the chandelier didn't look all that wide either, so he couldn't have had much space in there). My favorite part was when he came out with the flamethrowing, spark emitting wing device for Engal:

The show they put on was nothing short of amazing. My only disappointments for the evening were that they didn't play Los, ran out of tour shirts before I could get one (I still will, I just have to wait for them to be on the site), no real pits started near me, and had a shitty opener but all of these are extremely miniscule. After the show I walked away with a greater love and respect for the band and their music, something that certainly didn't happen when I saw A7X. If you like their music and haven't seen them what the hell are you doing? If you don't I still highly recommend checking them out, however with seats still being around $50 it might not be worth it for a non-fan. The show was WELL worth the (high) price of admission and should they decide to again tour the states you can be sure I will do everything I can to see them again!

Project featuring Zach Hill of Hella. Oh man, these guys have been one of my favorite groups. It is rap/hip hop music, but in a way that I think can appeal to metalheads. The beats are noisy and aggressive, while the vocalist often screams out rhymes rather than conventional rapping.

Some people won't like this, but I really do.

Exmilitary was one of my favorite albums last year, especially given that it was released independently for free online. The Money Store came out last month and it is looking like it will be one of my favorites of this year as well. The two albums are completely different, but equally aggressive in their own ways.

Forever Young festival 2012, May 12th, Raadhuislaan Grootebroek

Forever Young is a funny lot. For nearly 25 years it’s organized by the same team, more or less the same programming and for 25 years the audience has hardly changed. OK, they’ve added an extra night to it, the tent is already placed so why not thank the volunteers and the village for everything, but in it’s heart it hasn’t changed much over the years. The programming has been roughly the same for years: local talent – regional talent – different style music – rockband – (international) headliner – DJs Fatboy and Slim. Everybody pass out. Westfriesians know that. Westfriesians find that comforting. I was 17 when I first entered Forever Young, the festival did hit big at once: Sacred Reich was confirmed for that edition. Phil Rind being in the hospital in Hoorn prevented it at the last second, but the other SR members were present back stage. Over the years there have been great bands, most of them Dutch, but not the least ones: Bad to the Bone, Iron Fist (had to play in Sacred Reich’s time as well, so they ‘just’ started all over  ) The Gathering, Gorefest, Heideroosjes, The Shavers, Within Temptation, Jovink & The Voederbietels, Shaking Godspeed, and great tribute bands like ACtion in DC and Feuerengel. This year wouldn’t be different.

Tom was in for it as well, the first agreement was that we would go early and by taxi, the first band Maslov was said to be a great band. But we also agreed to call before, if I hadn’t heard anything by 3 PM I would go alone. In the morning I went to my brother’s house, as my nephew David turned nine the day after, I’d be cycling all across West Friesland again. So.. second band Backcorner Boogie Band, with ex-Jovink-guitarist Lovink in the band was missed too. I already knew some of my friends were going early too, so first couple of mates I found were Bram, Axel, Tijmen and Kees. Add Amstel beer and a band on stage.. yeah cool. Would Janet be there as well? No, but as usual I soon met my first gf ever Simone and the groovy death-and-balck-metal-chick Cynthia as well. First band we got to see was King Jack, a four-piece-seventies-rock-tribute band, playing their own songs; including mellotron, Moog and a Doors-/ Animals-like sound. I liked it, but the tent was still nearly empty. Not strange, the weather was great then. Over the day there were some minor raindrops, but nothing serious. I had brought an extra longsleeve for the ride home (I didn’t forget the nasty throat ache from last week’s Landje van Pop). Found Daniel, Jos, Mikert and the lot.

The boys were in for a snack, but as I had eaten an entire pizza before mounting my bike, I only took the scrapes Daan didn’t want to be fed by his mom ;) The second band for me was Def P and the Howling Coyotes. Note: Def P had been frontman for the notorious Amsterdam-based Nederhop band Osdorp Posse for years and years, but after the hip hop formation died Def P was to be seen in various bands and projects, shimmering between death metal (with Nembrionic), bubblegum pop (with Grolschbusters) and now… rockabilly. Well played, yeah, but still the tag of hip hop surrounds Def P. I have very double feelings about this gig. I liked the band, but have nothing with rap or hip hop and that’s exactly what Amsterdammer Pascal Griffioen is all about. It does show Forever Young is more wide than I said in the introduction, but still. There was more music (and.. more known Dutch band members) present. The former singer of Urban Dance Squad, Rudeboy, is one of them. He’s touring nowadays with The Phantom Four & The Aquido. According to the Forever Young website one of the Phantoms was in Treble Spankers, even linked to Pulp Fiction (as OST? Couldn’t find it). So.. much specified, nothing present about music, so I had no idea what to expect. It turned out to be authentic end-of-sixties-early-seventies-rock, influenced by The Beatles, The Byrds and The Stooges. Yeah. This was cool!!

One other known Dutch musician is Johannes de Boom, former singer of The Shavers, now second spiritual and poetical guide to Peter Pan Speedrock. Man, did he grow old in just over a year.. Their first spiritual (and substances-) guide Dikke Dennis does the introduction and Grootebroek trembles on Westfriesian soil. Peter Pan Speedrock is a band that can do no harm in West Friesland, so they go, as usual, full throttle. Loud, fast, pit-able rock music, sharp as the blade of their amphetamine table. Forgot to mention: the organization had placed a wooden floor so the audience wouldn’t drown in mud (what? Is God Dethroned present too? No, pity) but the floor doesn’t reach the stage so it’s a splash of clay here, a lump of dirt there, but still flying bodies, gushes of sweat and hairs everywhere. One hour of pure rock adrenaline is enough to boil the entire tent. But sweat dries fast when Miss Montreal slithers on stage. Yeah, you did a commercial, yeah you did De Wereld Draait Door (pretty popular Dutch mixture show of news, cabaret, sports, interviews, music and then some), did a lot of festivals, yeah, but mostly…you opened for Chris Martin too. I hate his band so much I don’t even bother to look at the stage for this Dutch pretty, and I search my own. I thought.

There she was, Janet, pretty rock chick in black, nice to start talking… and leave. With her friend that is, not me. I lost it somehow. The next day I got a lovely SMS-text about us meeting the night before, but what do you want now? I’m confused, I didn’t even have time to take a picture of/with you, you were so… gone. Then, I decided ‘just to get drunk’ and stalked every bit of known person for beer. I had had it. One zip, fine thank you, off again. One full glass? Wow thanks, one zip and gone. I staggered to my bike, not caring about the too-known-for-Forever-Young-DJs F&S, I went home. Accompanied by Kim as Tom had gone by taxi after all we rode to Hoogkarspel and Westwoud. Another weird ending to a pretty nice festival.

Forever Young, keep the same up, don’t go the Dijkpop way and I will return. Probably for the 18th time. Not even sure how often I went, but no matter.

This is your brain on Portal of I. Not even once.

After a troubled 6 years since inception, including revolving door lineup changes, a fierce battle with the state and a myriad of delays, the first LP from Melbourne's Ne Obliviscaris is finally here. Including full re-recordings of the initial appetite whetting demo, the disc for Portal of I is almost full. A mere 7.5 minutes short of capacity, but all of that time is densely populated, and shows how a band with the rare gift of time to slowcook and refine ideas can have it pay off like this.

The difficult background aside, the resulting album is pure, ambitious musicianship and composition. Songs that are exercises in extremes of ability and silky smooth genre hopping, dips and plateaus of arrangements played at both breakneck and soulful paces. You're never far from your next headspin, when listening to a discordant extreme black metal passage one minute don't be surprised to be immersed in Spanish flamenco the next. It is heavy with ideas and yes you will get lost on your first outing, but part of the merit from this record is coming back to it and figuring out something you couldn't before and picking up things you missed previously, like subtle notes being played in the background.

The album can both tell its story in 10 minute trips or can serve as an singular glorious journey like Colors or Metropolis Pt 2. The tracks from The Aurora Veil all have subtle but surprising changes, and the four new songs set new heights of challenges to both the craftsmen and the unprepared ear. Layering is a key aspect to the sound and it's surprising how well it is executed with everyone constantly playing something different to form a whole. The guitars are almost always playing opposing parts, either a harmony or bouncing off each other with rhythm and lead. The bass never stagnates and is, as always, the last element to crack but rewarding when you can pick it out. Drums are largely typical driving and blasting force but get a moment here and there to shine. The extreme death and black metal vocals of Xenoyr are an unsung (lol) achievement, and the best use of them is at the crux of Tapestry Of The Starless Abstract, savagely screeching “PARADISE FOUND.”

All the sounds coming from sixth member Tim Charles, both his clean vocals and violin, are the divisive, contentious issue. He essentially makes or breaks the band for everybody trying to listen to Ne Obliviscaris. For many people softened by decades of fanaticism for the genre bending Opeth and their peers, Tim brings Ne Obliviscaris out into the limelight and makes them truly unique with fresh elements of classical and his vocal delivery. From a metal background however you have purists and minds wired for dark sounds only that Tim challenges, and there will be casualties.

Now onto the missteps. Straight away I noticed a difference in production to the demo in how the guitars are at the forefront. Compare it to their demo which was impressively produced on a shoestring budget but gave all the parts parity and it is a crutch that the album bears. Luckily this seems to only be a hindrance during the full strummed black metal chords, as the same clear guitar production benefits the tremolo riffs on single strings, where you can pick up on a lot more technical intricacies than before. Also the drumming seems to have lost some of its character as a victim of making all other parts parts audible.

And something I've mentioned before but I still feel it's an elephant in the room. The song titles. Jesus christ, if I wanted to hear about kaleidoscopes, butterflies and flowers I would watch My Little Pony. Despite being impatient after all that anticipation leading up to the album's release, the first thing I did when putting this in iTunes was change/shorten two of the titles to “Of the Lepers” and “And Plagues.” Even though I'm a last.fm snob and it goes against correct scrobbling, I felt immediate relief not having to see that any more.

The same may be for the lyrics but that's the last thing I usually look at even after an album clicks. For dark and beautiful contrasting soundscapes such as these I still don't know if imagery of bouquets of colour are a good fit. I can tell some of those poncey feelings translate into the clean vocals but it has yet to bother me. This is my personal feeling about it, but it may even be refreshing to those who are bored with images of grey skies and dead trees from similar music.

In the end, with an album so dense and long it feels like the life's work of artisans, and is so successful it'd be something to hang in the Louvre equivalent of the metal coffers. I can't imagine this level of work being fully realised if constrained to a deadline in future but I'm so glad that Portal of I finally made it, and no matter where the band goes from here, this album will remain untarnished. It asks a lot from it's listeners but rewards them. It's staggering in its variety but holds together impressively. It does not disappoint on the years of waiting. It is an early contender for album of the year and a triumph for some skilled but approachable Australian bros with driving ambition and brilliant ideas.

Screaming Insight needed

I am the vocalist in a screamo band where I incorporate a lot of screaming and singing. I also taught myself through practice and copying how I felt the vocalist was creating there sound. I am new screaming and after a 30-45 minute set I am hoarse/scratchy. Also by the third song I can't carry out certain higher pitched singing tones. I do catch myself breathing with my chest before screams rather than my stomach since I'm constantly switching between singing/screaming, but I mainly am trying to understand 2 principals to this:

1.) How loud is a scream really? Its hard to judge when I model after vocalists amplified (by mic) and I may be pushing entirely to hard

2.) Being I go by feel and mimicking (persay silverstein), from what I hear from screaming vocals it seems to come from compressing air and contracting your trachea (anatomically speaking)? I just want to make sure the sound is coming from the correct part of my throat before a electrolarynx is the only mic I get to sing through lol

Here is a youtube link to our first song that has a good bit of screaming, maybe a vocalist can hear how/if I'm doing it wrong.

Whiskey Throttle - If you rape a hooker, is it stealing - YouTube

I understand respect vocally is earned through practice and finding your own sound, but I am the first person to seek constructive criticism. I give a lot of respect to death vocalists being the art they have perfected by using lots of different screams. I just need to find a powerful scream that wont kill my cords so I can sing as well and create our own sound that I have in mind. Any wisdom is appreciated guys.

Split 7"s are all the rage, and Converge have just announced a new split they'll be putting out in the near future with grind godfathers Naplam Death. No release date has been announced yet, but it sounds ridiculous. Napalm's contribution will come in the form of two new tracks, "Will By Mouth" and "No Impediment To Triumph (Bhopal)". For their part, Converge will be including "No Light Escapes," the new track they have been performing live and a cover of Entombed's classic, "Wolverine Blues" featuring this ridiculous all star lineup:

Tomas Lindberg (Disfear, At The Gates, Lock Up),
Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom, Split Cranium),
Kevin Baker (APMD, The Hope Conspiracy),
Brian Izzi (Trap Them)

The official Deathwish press release promises more names on the "We Are the World" style rendition of "Wolverine Blues." I'm assuming all of these were gathered at various recording sessions by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, who had Aaron Turner in for Old Man Gloom sessions, and Tomas Lindberg was photographed hanging out with Converge a few months back, so now we know why.

To say I am really excited for this is a huge understatement. I am also excited to hear a FULL new Converge record, All We Love We Leave Behind. Can we get that soon, please?
