It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came and the grasshopper died and the octopus ate all his acorns and also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?

I have no idea about vocals. That is just something I have never worried about and have nothing to suggest really. Other than the fact that pro vocals are done on a condenser or ribbon mic, nice preamp, and compressed usually. And auto-tuned for almost all but the greatest of vocal talents. Or smallest of budgets.

I've tried doing covers using Audacity although hthe Noise Removal effect tends to mess up the vocals at times. Although webcam is a good idea too.

I set up my own little recording studio for under $300 and use that equipment to record vocal covers all the time. Granted, I don't get the best sound quality, but it's decent enough that I don't get any weird feedback and can manage some basic sound editing. I'm all about ProTools! You can add instrumentals at any point in your recording process and lay down multiple tracks for a really thick sound. It's a little difficult to figure out, but it's golden. It came along with the interface I purchased for $100.
