    Starting shred lessons tomorrow!

Tomorrow I'm meeting up with Desecrate's lead guitar player to begin lessons! I've been playing for about 3 years now so I've got a good understanding of everything but this will be more of development of skills and learning how/when to use them.
To show what I know I'm going to play one of my songs, an Alexi Laiho style song and Wintersun's "Beyond the Dark Sun". Then we'll go from there, shred on!

The best of luck to you, I need to have a good instructor and I don't want to go to some guitar store once a week to have an hour with some guy they are paying to teach guitar.

lessons always help. other people can easily see things you are doing wrong, whereas you might never notice...and therefore never advance on your own.

desecrate? i remember seeing them open for vektor. they had a 30 minute set but finally stopped after an hour. vektor only had 20 minutes to play when they originally had an hour.

    Yeah, same here.
This dude came to my house once a week for about a month and taught me classical guitar, but he couldnt make the trip any more and had to stop.
I really want to take lessons but I dont know where to start looking for a teacher.

I've been playing guitar for a solid month now. I've gotten pretty decent at it and understand how easy some riffs are to write (basically, I have even less respect for certain guitarists; Open close open close, wow). My buddy gave me a few tips as he taught himself to play guitar and I plan on doing the same thing and save my money for instruments. Shredding is all a manner of sweeping and speed picking. To me its simple finger dexterity and playing the guitar enough to be good. The hard thing however...is doing it in time.

yes, i agree. whoever played guitar on march of the warriors had some issues with keeping the time straight in the solo section and the outro riff. took me like 20-30 takes to kinda figure out what was going on.

Well I think my problem is that I started when I was 45 years old. Finger dexterity I believe is in the past for me. I have about 40 riffs I can play, No leads.Stretching more that 2 frets is very difficult.

You're right. Although there are a lot of people who didn't get formal teaching that have a distinct style because of their own way they learned that wouldn't be there from learning with somebody. (Of course, that distinct style could limit their playing ability)

My lesson was a lot fun actually, we covered lots of finger dexterity exercises, talked about metal, then jammed, then talked about video games, started playing video game music on our guitars, etc.... I'm self taught as well, so I have nothing against people who are self taught. Learning on your own helps things stick in your head better. But it helps to have an analysis of your playing, as Ryukin said.
My teacher was actually taught by Chris Broderick of Jag Panzer, so he has lots of great playing tips that need to be seen, heard and explained. Where as a DVD might not cover little things that might trip you up.

the only major thing wrong with teaching yourself is that you form bad habbits like not using your pinkies and sloppy picking. but who knows, we could all be the next dave mustaine who never learned from lessons until his arm had an abortion.

i learned drums from a teacher and now im amazing (narcissism...)

i taught myself the guitar and im not amazing at all. i know a ton of individual techniques like tapping from 2-4 fingers, pick tapping, double picking, palm muting, power chords, bar chords, some open chords, hammerons, pulloffs, harmonics, pinch harmonics, pick slides, several fret stretches, and pinky usage... but i suck at puttung them together coherently and not sloppily. i can harldy play anything all the way through.

i learned enough marimba to play a bach sonata in less that a year but thats becuase i had lessons every week for 2 semesters. on my own i would be far from this level.

I know. When I learned how to play Master of Puppets it kind of killed the song for me because its so easy. But even so I realized metal guitar is more about songwriting than actually being hard to play most of the time. I gave up on trying to be Steve Vai and just try to write songs.

its always fun to find a really simple sounding riff and try to learn it, only to realize you cant possible play it. which just shos that that guitarist is so good that they make hard things sound easy.

There's always those riffs where you can picture in your head how you would play them, but then when you try it you're like "How do the play that?"

it's easy as hell but I don't think that there is a better song to warm up your hands to than master of puppets. since you are always moving at a steady pace it really puts your chops in order.

When I got home from G3 the other night it was about midnight and my sisters were asleep but I was too pumped to got to bed, so I moved my guitar shit to the computer on the other end of the house and played and downloaded tabs until about 4am. I have a newfound joy for guitar.

Also, I can play really well on my own guitar with my basic one-pedal sound, but whenever I pick up someone elses I screw up regularly, because of the shape, and strings, and the distance of the strings from the fret board and the different sound doesn't help either. Im a one guitar dude.

And Im still on factory strings, none of them have broken and I've been playing for a year now. I bought a set, asked a friend how to restring, and none of what he said applies to my guitar, dammit, so I dont know how to do it. I'll look it up.

you take the strings off one at a time, and then as each old one comes off, you put a new one in its place. then you tune them with the pegs like normal. and then you tune them again... then later you tune them again. then you have successfully restrung a guitar.

If you're lucky enough to have a whammy bar then you get the joy of having to play with the springs on the back to balance the tremelo. It's a continous process too, you have to tune the strings and balance the tremelo until it stays in tune. And if you want to play with your whammy, then the springs have to be loose enough to allow it to move and the strings have enough tension to keep the tremelo "floating". After doing all this you wont even want to touch the whammy bar because it will cause everything to become unbalanced.
"Guitarists spend 50% of their time tuning their guitars, and the other 50% is spent playing out of tune."
