    Is Moshing still cool?

The smell of sweat and blood. You can almost still feel the concert from the night before. It was another "rager". You were up top watching the pit circle around some poor unsuspecting kid that had jeans that were a tad too tight. He was New Orleans and the pit was Katrina. It descended upon him and robbed him of his humanity. What brutal carnage...then you go and mop the floor up for the Slayer show that is coming tonight.

Pitting has been a part of metal since the days when Iommi's medium paced riffs weren't enough. Fans needed speed. With speed came aggression. With aggression came a desire to express that aggression. This was pitting. I don't feel I need to give a history lesson to the metal community out there. It started with punk and when metal absorbed punk influences it did so culturally as well as musically.

The question I ask is, Is moshing still cool to do? I remember going to my first Slayer show and walking out with bruises and my back while holding my buddy up with his bloody nose. Oh man was that a killer show. They had just released God Hates Us All and with Bostaph behind the kit they were destroying city after city. As I get older (I'm 22 but, I know I sound like I'm 40 when I say this) the pit seems less appealing. I come there to WATCH the band and when it's a really good tune, headbang with it and of course do the air guitar when the solos come on. It seems pitting has lost its appeal. Granted I always pit to at least one song from Slayer but, that's just nostalgia acting up.

My theory is that as metal fans mature they lose their desire to pit and become like fans of jazz, appreciating the music to its fullest extent. One can see this from the people who stay in the back and carefully watch every note bend, scream and crash hit. I honestly see them as appreciating the show more then the pitters. Far too often, the pitters are over zealous teenagers with some anger to get out. They know no songs of the band but they want to just let go. It is an immature act but, it is understood from my end. If I don't want to be involved then I stay out of the pit, its that simple. Although, I will say, when I go to a power metal show, however rare they may be for me nowadays, I do not want to see one kid spinning his arms. I have stopped pits before and I will do it again. It doesn't belong at those shows. The music is way to upbeat but the kid hears a downtuned guitar and thinks "TIME TO USE MY MOVES!" These kids apparently haven't discovered death metal yet but, I will give them time. Maybe they will grow out of this phase.

For me, Angel of Death is always a pitting song but, otherwise I will enjoy the band and let them know that I am a bigger fan then the kid that sweats and bleeds without knowing the songs. Horns to the sky brothers and sisters and STAY METAL!

I remember posting a few things as The Cactus Monster here in the Boiling Point but, to be honest it wasn't to my liking. I decided to evolve the Cactus Monster articles into more metal related material. If you guys have any ideas for discussion, I would love to hear them.

Last weekend was the Dijkpop festival. Tom had been drinking so much on the Avond van Andijk he lost his shoes somewhere. Result: barefooted moshing during John Coffey

I'll mosh when I feel it. Otherwise I'm headbanging/dancing in place with my chosen beverage of the night.

No core, No Trends, No Fun, No Mosh.

Used to think it was stupid, I now agree with it.

    I would say, yes.
Rip my skin from my bones; I won't bleed
Rip my heart from my chest; I won't scream

depends on the overall vibe of the show imo. Just last month I saw DRI live and that was one of the best thrash shows i've been to in YEARS. The mosh pit was intense and was a good mix of metalheads and punks. Plus, we never get any metal bands up here in flagstaff so i was definitely in the mood to mosh. and the weird thing is that i don't even listen to DRI all that much yet the show was so great. whereas there have been maaany times where i've gone to see a band that i liked a whole lot more and just had no desire to mosh...
